Within 24 Hours

Register Your Address with the Police

Per Chinese law, every foreign national must register their place of residence at the local police station within 24 hours of arrival in China.

If you live on campus, the dormitory front desk handles lodging registration on your behalf — bring your passport when you check in.

If you live off-campus, you (or your landlord) must visit the local police station within 24 hours of arrival with your passport, residence certificate, and a completed lodging registration form.

Failing to complete lodging registration may result in penalties from the public security organs under Chinese law.

  • Passport with valid X visa and entry stamp
  • Tenancy contract (if off-campus); landlord must hold ID, property ownership, and house leasing certificates
  • Hotel/tenement residents: certificate of accommodation duration from property management
  • Completed lodging registration form (provided by the police station)

Within 30 Days

Convert X1 Visa to Residence Permit

X1 visa holders (programs 180 days+) must convert to a Residence Permit within 30 days of arrival. This is processed at Xi'an Exit-Entry Administration with help from the International Office.

The International Office runs scheduled trips to the Exit-Entry Administration during orientation. Bring your passport, JW202, Admission Notice, physical examination record, lodging registration receipt, and passport-size photos.
